Chances good for new battery By JOYN WALBY. IF YOU drive a vehicle in Canada, you stand a one-in- six chance of having to buy a new battery this year. A re- cent survey found that the batteries in 17 per cent of all vehicles driven on Canadian roads will be replaced during the next 12 months. It’s a figure repeated year after year. HEART OF THE SYSTEM Think of a battery as the heart of your vehicle’s elec- trical system. It stores the energy needed to start the engine; supplies extra power to your heater, headlights, power windwos, and seats; and controls surges of high voltage that might otherwise damage electrical] components. Although some batteries can last up to seven years, on average — and under normal! conditions — three years is usually the maximum. Then, natural aging and falling winter temperatures combine to prevent it from creating the energy necessary to start your car. the year! A faulty voltage regulator can cause the bat- tery to overcharge, while low- mileage driving or infrequent use can cause a_severely- weakened condition known as sulfation. Of course, a bat- tery that has been banged around, too loosely or too tightly installed, is also doomed — through abuse — to early failure. Cold weather, is your bat- tery’s enemy. In cold weather, it doesn’t put out its full voltage. On a very cold day, instead of producing 12 volts, your battery may only produce nine or 10 volts. To make matters worse, the oil in the engine is cold, making _it harder to crank. EXTRAS OFF To help your battery on cold days, make sure all ac- cessories are off when start- ing your vehicle. A word of caution: Your battery produces and emits hydrogen and oxygen, es- pecially when it is near full charge. These gases are highly volatile. So to avoid the pos- sibility of explosion keep NEWS photo Stuart Davis flames and sparks away from the battery.
