The Attorney General noted that impaired driving is the most prevalent crime in Canada “Our provincial police departments are bolstering their regular forces and step- ping up their Counter Attack enforcement program to help curtail what is an extremely dangerous, and often lethal crime,”’ Smith said. **Police will be using every available officer and resource to step up roadblocks and carry out saturation traffic patrols during the months of December and January and BATmobiles (Breath Analysis Testing Mobile vans) will be used extensively throughout the holiday season.’ Drivers apprehended at road blocks will be charged if their blood alcohol reading exceeds .08 per cent. Smith pointed out that, upon first conviction, drivers face an automatic six-month driving prohibition, a fine and a criminal record. Fraser noted that, under the Motor Vehicle Act, pro- hibition from = driving is automatic upon conviction of a Criminal Code impaired driving offence. He also painted out that the Act allows the police to immediately impose a road- side suspension on any driver who ts suspected of impairment. **Fhat 24-hour suspension is reported to the Motor Vehicle Superintendent, who on checking the driver’s previous record, may _ in- crease the period of suspen- CAM HAIN stands beside his 15-passenger, six-wheeled , "638 Toronado. Smith added, ‘‘Those con- victed in the past have discovered the hard way that losing their driving licences has affected their jobs, fami- ly lives and social activities. Six months is a long time to be without a driver’s licence as it creates a number of pro- blems: no driving to and from work, no driving children to school, no shopp- ing, no visiting friends over the holidays. In short, one has none of the mobility to which one is normally ac- customed, unless of course there is somebody else to do the driving.”’ Driving after drinking re- mains a critical factor in traf- fic fatalities and = injury- causing collisions. “If you plan to drive at all during the holiday season — don’t drink. If you do drink, use public transportation. Just remember — none for the road,’” Smith said. ‘18 Monarch THE 1984 Recreation Vehicle and Outdoor Show will be ex- panded and moved to the B.C.
