Cigarette pricesd are so high
in many countries that you'll
have a choice - eat a
complete meal or buy a pack
of cigarettes! The price is
about the same. In Den-
mark, at over $3 a pack,
you'll rapidly lose your taste
for tobacco.

In Spain, you'll probably
learn to like ‘‘black
cigarettes.” These are made

locally with tar-colored
tobacco and taste like diesel
fumes. On my last tnp to
Spain, I quickly ran out of
my duty-free carton and_ at
first scorned the “diesel
delights.” Soon, I was
puffing away with all the
other budget travellers. You

DO get used to them!

In Italy, especially in
“seamy areas,” the black
market fiourishes ° in

American cigarettes. Where
you'll pay an arm and leg for
good brands in cigarette
shops, side-street vendors
well from portable tables at
about $1.25 a pack.

Remember, in many
countries, cigarettes are only
available from licensed
“Tobacco Shops” which
open at scheduled times. It’s
a real ordeal for a smoker
should all the shops be
closed and you

butt. Matches, too, are hard
to find. They don't hand
them around in restaurants
and bars, as they do here.
Carry a supply of disposable

I just purchased a new
gimmick that seems to be
working well. It’s a “1 For
the Road” hair dryer from
Clairol. Light and tiny to
pack, it generates a lot of

power. Remember, with any
of these convertible ap-
pliances, you still need a set
of adaptor plugs. Spain and
Italy require round ter-
minals, Holland needs a
three-prong deal and so on.
Sometimes, hotel desks have
some to loan but don’t count
on it. Remember to read the
instruction booklet on any
“convertible” appliance.
There is often a warning
about not using the highest
settings because overseas
power sources generate
more heat and can burn-out
your gadget.

A very irate reader tele-
