There are, however, certain aspects of the job that must be considered for truly professional results. Painting requires caroful product selection, thorough wall preparation, good apphcation techmques and ample time to do the job well. Begin your painting project by ensumng that you have, in sufficient quantities, all the required tools and matenals. One gallon of paint will usually give one coat to between 450 to 500 square fect or an average 10°x12° room with an 8' high ceiling. Additional amounts will be needed for a second coat and teim work. The most common types of interior paints are alkyd and latex. Alkyd paints are oil based and are available in finishes ranging from low sheen to high gloss. They are extremely durable but are difficult to work with because of thei strong odor, long drying tme and need for special cleaning solvents. Latex paimts are water based and are easier to apply. dry more quickly (to the tovch within an hour) and have less odor than the alkyd type. They wash off skin and brushes with soap and water yet are reasonably durable on wall surfaces They come in matt flat, low sheen, semi-gloss and gloss finishes.
