Roma renovation set for summer From page 20 tency is a tribute to the strength of a shared vision and extended fami- ly values, The Corsis, you sev, have estab- lished a staff that has become as tuch family as they are business associates. A recent Table Hopping family Roma experience bore out that real- ity. Presided over by an understand- ably subdued but still faultlessly attentive Mario Corsi, Rama deliv- ered a sumptuous Italian feast in its spacious second-storey dining room. Italian family feasts demand food and wine in abundant variety, and that is what Roma offers. For the diner used to less viva- cious culinary cultures, the restau- rant’s menu can be overwhelming. Appetizers ($6.50 to $9): Everything from Steamed black mussels with tomato, basil and hot peperoncino breth to Prosciutto ham with grilled eggplant and mar- inated artichokes. Entree sections include fish, grilled meats and veal and chicken ($14 to $19). ’ Roma's pasta selection ($12 to $13) is divided into spaghetti, fet~ tuccine, penne, linguine, fusilli, carapanelle and stuffed pasta’ cate- gories.: . .. The restaurant’ s wine list, too, is chailenging. It contains over 250 bottles, including what is surely the most extensive listing of Italian wines on the North Shore. I advise seeking assistance from your Roma waiter to ensure that your viticultural experience is a rewarding one, The quality of Rome food has not suffered with Antonio Corsi's departure. Chef Rob Parrot, who has worked with the Corsis since Roma opened, has ably filled the void left by Antonio. Our meals were roundly applauded. Antipasto plates included a col- orful array of Italian finger food: grilled eggplant, cantatoupe wrapped in proscuitto, sauteed prawns, marinated mushrooms, boconccini-stuffed radicchio leaves, calamari and vegetable antipastc. Large platters are ideal for shar- ing and stimulating conversation. For many it is meal enough when combined with Roma's excellent pizza-style and foccaccia breads. _ The minestrone, meanwhile, was @ spicy and robust version of the classic Italian soup. Table Hopping was serviced promptly, dispelling any obstacle to the full enjoyment of a satisfying family dining experience. There is much to recon:zmend Roma, but its interior grows tired and wom. - Plans are therefore on the Corsi drawing board to overhaul the .. festaufant in early or late summer. Details of the upgrade will appear in this spacé as soon as they have been finalized. In the meantime, Roma remains a place for the hearty celebration of food and family Corsi-style. Keyhole presents Jitters From page 17 without travelling downtown, Keyhole Theatre Company's production of David French's Jitters runs at Presentation House to June 10, This is a new company, to me, of actors in training who’ drew a good crowd on opening night. Jitters is by no means French's best play but it has had a life of its own on the strength of being a Canadian, rather than a British, farce. It raises the curtain on the backstage side of a company desperate for a Broadway suc- cess with a new play. Insecurity breeds sarcasm, bitchiness and some great one- liners, But not much chunges in the course of the play and to disguise that fact pace becomes everything. Unfortunately, while open- ing night saw a lot of good . work from the cast, each act failed to drive towards its own climax. Mark Noel, as a nervous mommy’s boy, drew most of the laughs opening night as he teetered on the edge of stereo- type while Kevin Lobzun didn’t miss a beat in a standout performance as the director who has to deal with the tantrums. ; While it's no fun criticizing an actress playing an actress being dumped on by critics it has to be said that Sarah Mason was the principal cul- prit in the stop-and-start stakes. One For The Road, a come- . dy by Shirley Valentine/Educating Rita author Willy Russell is next up for Deep Cove Stage. : “Reservations for the June 8- 24 tun can be made at the Shaw Theatre, 929-3200.
