And he was more excited about the sun coming out in Vancouver and the prospect of a stroll around downtown than the reaction of his West Coast peers tes his new film. In May, the Canadian director succezded in holding the audience on closing night in Cannes, a Herculean feat. Slotted in between the award ceremony and the parties, if you can keep the tired and impatient Cannes audience in their seats you can play te anyone. Stardom, Arcand's first film in English, is certainly keeping people in their seats, and causing quite a buzz. “This is the first film I've made where people either love it or hate it,” says the affable Arcand. “It’s either ‘This is a piece of s#!*%, the negative should be destroyed’ or people enjoy every second of it and want to see it a second time.” It's not the film’s story that is causing the controversy, it’s Arcand’s approach in telling it. Stardem chronicles the quick journey of small-cown girl Tina Menzhal, trom local hockey star to global supermodel. But although it’s Tina’s story, the audi- ence never teally discovers anything about her.
