Students at Ross Road elemen- tary school spent Thursday, Sept. 30° in the schoolyard, planting ‘approximately 360 trees and shrubs, most of them native to the region, and chosen for their attrac- tiveness to birds and butterflies . The project is part of a bigger plan to involve the school's stu- dents in environmental stewardship and io provide a safe, ace cessible outdoor environment for them to Jearn in. In the past few years, students at the Lynn Valley school have scen new swings erected, an island with a moat constructed, a sports court completed, trees planted and piles of fill shaped into grassy berms and a hill for climbing on. The master plan for the renova- tion and rehabilitation of the schoolyard was designed. by FORMA Design Inc. and its imple- .mentation has taken tremendous community effort — including that of parent volunteers, donated food materials and backhoe services donated by Kling Backhoe. The project also received sup- port from The Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation, which provided $3,500 to purchase the plants and materials for the new garden. The students also received assis- tance in the planning and planting, of the new garden from Graham . In August, the association announced the winners of Silver Georgie awards, given to recog- nize high quality, innovation and affordability in B.C.’s residential construction industry. This year, the City of North Vancouver was listed in the cate- gory for Excellence by Local Government in Cooperation/ ‘Leadership With Industry for ns work on building envelopes in new construction. The award was given to local governments that have shown the greatest leadership in fostering cooperation between public and rivate organizations in addressing using issues.
