Sunday, August 24, 1997 — North Shore News - 9 north shore news AIL ROX Driver educat ing grade gets fal Dear Editor: Did you know that anyone with a valid dri- vers licence in any of the provinces, the U.S. or even Japan can get a B.C. drivers licence with- out taking a road test or written test? It’s this amazing. The government is spend- ing a lot of money trying to convince us that they are making the road “safer”. Give me a break! The reasoning behind it (according to the Motor Vehicle people) is that the testing in all the other provinces, the US and Japan is tougher than the resting in BC so they see it as valid. What does that say about the BC testing? Quebec used to have the worst driving record, but instituted mandatory driver lessons for any new drivers and B.C. residents now enjoy the reputation of being the worst drivers in Canada. Why? Because people aren’t educated on driving and they don’t pay attention to the toad, We're not even thinking about making the situation better by requiring lessons, we're giving licences away without testing. And the tests are a joke but at least it establishes a basic competence. If you're upset about this (and you should Michael if you're a BC taxpayer), contact the min- wes responsible for the changes The new policies were put into effect July 1 1 Write to: Superintendent of Motor Vehicles Vicki Farrelly 2631 Douglas Sweet Victoria, BC V8T 5A3 TEL: 800-950-1498 FAX: 250-356-7369 Minister of Transportation and Highways Lois Boone Room 28, Parliament Building Victoria BC V8V 1X4 (800) 663-7867 (Ask for the Minister Transportation) Insurance Corporation of BC Tom Thompson, President 151 Esplanade North Vancouver, BC V7M 3H9 J Cognac cognac@usa.net Schumacher’s Choice The sign af excel tence Imponers ‘of Gemstones.
