enthralling battle for sur-

- vival,

Our neighborhood eagle
had made a lunge for a mal-
lard over the chuck. Smartly
the duck folded its wings and
hit the water like a dart.

‘When it surfaced, quacking

loudly, the eagle was coming
down with talons trailing, but

» the duck waited till the last

moment and dived again,
then came up again to get a

’ fix on the enemy’s approach.

The eagle wheeled and came
back for its prey, but the.
duck, still cool although
making.a tremendous racket,
dived again.

And so it went on, per-

“aps half a dozen times until
__ the eagle gaye up and flew

back to its perch. The duck,

exhausted, lumbered for the © .

far shore to join its mate.
The eagle, a huge beast,

sat almost directly above us,

king of all he surveyed, but

boat, so we would have been
happy to share our vegetable
