It never ceases to amaze
me how genetic engineering
proponents consistently like
to cloud the isstte of the
New Biotechnology by say-
ing that it’s been around for

_ centuries and “Every plant
on our shelves today has
been genetically altered
using an artificial process of
breeding" (Feb, 14 North
Shore News letter to the
editor “Genetic food for
thought” by Zamir Punja).

It is true that traditional
selective breeding could be
viewed as “unnatural” since
the intent is to breed a new
type of cow from a cow ora
new type of potato from a
potato,

However, when scientists
discovered recently how to
make recombinant DNA,
they were now able to trans-
fer genetic material across
species barriers and breed a
fish with a tomato or a
human gene with a canola
plant. oe

It is the latter scenario
that has people concerned.
In either case, no matter if
you agree or disagree with
the manipulation or inser-
tion of foreign DNA into
bacteria, plants, animals or
humans, it is both the propo-
nents’ and critics” option to
choose to eut them or not.

Only labeling of geneti-
cally engineered foods will
allaw people to make an
informed choice and this is
not happening in Canada.
