AT THE risk of being

ask what pleasure there can
be in going into the woods to
~ shoot a bear.

This querulous thought occurred
when | saw a picture in B.C. Report
magazine of two hunters posed
behind a bear that was in rigor |
mortis, its legs sticking stiffly in
the air and a hunter’ stifle resting
oone,

There is no contest. where’ burs.
and armed humans are concerned. .
If there were any, there would be
fewer hunters. As things are. the

visitor from the prairies might
never see a whale, except on TV.

the same as seeing the real thing.

! um, as usual, being noble
about this. For 30 years or'so I've
been able to watch them from our
cottage on Spud Island, and never
failed to shout “The whales are
coming” as they puff and spout and
splash their way by.

So it would be easy for me to.
say there should be no whales in
captivity.

There’s something else that:
occurs to my busy brain. It is that
the people who parade with the ~
placards at the Vancouver
Aquarium may not be concerned

about the whales at all.

They may just want to get their

faces on TV, because if there's one
thing that's typical of this media
age, itis that any placard will do

; (provided it's not being carried by

the right wing).

But we were talking about
bears, which go with whales only,
on totem poles.

The magazine story 'that accom-
panied the picture of the dead bear
and its intrepid conquerors showed
that 10 foreigners had killed six:
bears and one wolf.

‘That they were foreigners’ ise
beside the point, But it wouldn't have
brought me to tears, exactly, if it :
had shown that the six bears and the
one wolf had killed 10 foreigners,’
