PEOPLE WHO occupy the
cabins on Hollyburn Ridge
have won their fight against a
dramatic proposed increase in
the annual user fee they pay to
the District of West Vancouver.

District Council rejected a sug-
gested increase Monday which
would have seen the cost of the per-
mit to occupy the cabins increase
_ from $275 a year. to $500 in 1995,

* $650 in 1996, with the fee eventual-
ly reaching $1,000 by: 1998,

Council instead passed a motion
put forward .by Coun. | Allan
Williams to set the fee at-$275 in
1995, with annual: increases to be
indexed along with the cost of living
» or B.C. parks rates, whichever is
greater.

for cubin users. Many families have
occupied the t11 cabins since they
were built on the ridge in the 1930s.

make “a cash grab’ from a small
; group,” and by rejecting it, he said,

after Hale and several other of the
two dozen or so cabin users who
attended the council meeting talked
about what the cabins have meant to
their lives, and the possible impact
the higher fees could have.

Richard Smith, who came from

his home in Surrey to address the
issue, told council the small cabin
his family purchased for $700 in
1959 played an important part in his
childhood, and is now playing a role
in his childrens’ lives.

Association would like to see a
