In this week’s golf tip, Andrews explains his philosophy. Simplicity the key to swing ONE OF the biggest problems I see on the teaching tee is stu- dents trying to hit the ball by swinging the arms violently. By Doug Andrews Contributing Writer This makes for a frustrating round of golf with no idea which direction the ball will go with any given swing of the club. There is, however, a much sim- pler and more reliable way to swing the golf club. I like to think of the arms, hands, and golf club as the passengers on the ride we call the golf swing — not the driver as is the case in the scenario described above. There is a fundamental dif- ference between swinging the golf club and allowing the golf club to swing. Let me explain my philosophy ‘and give you a drill to help. 1 believe that the source of power in the golf swing is the torso (big muscles}. > It is the rotation of your hips and shoulders on the backswing and the rhythm of the rotation on the down- swing which drives the club head. Swinging the arms too quickly will make them pass your source of power before impact and make it ineffective. The most important factor in achieving a golf swing which dri- ves the club head is realizing that the downswing starts from the ground up. The club head should be the last thing to move when chang- ing directions from the backswing to the downswing. Try this often-prescribed dril! before going to your neat practice session. Dig a whisk broom out of the closet. This tool offers wind resistance sc it will be more diffi- cult to swing your arms quickly. Now, set up as you would to hit a ball. Take your normal backswing to the halfway backhand position and hold. From this position, start your downswing but don’t swing your arms. Instead, concenirate on turn- ing your right hip towards your tar- get until you reach your finish posi- GOLF PRO Doug Andrews tion (weight over your left teg and facing the target. Repeat this drill many times and I think you will soon find your torso pulling the broom around instead of the broom pulling you around, Doug Andraws is the Head Golf Professional at the Seymour Creek Golf Centre.
