BUSINESS BRIEFS Compiled by Kate Zimmerman permeerrsenen: Hooking marlin A North Vancouver communica- tions business has hooked Thomas Cook/Marlin Travel at least tem- porarily on a storefront computer program designed to lure customers into stores, Barry O'Hara of O'Hara Communications is hoping his ser- vice, currently playing in the win- dows of the company's Park Royal Mall and Richmond stores, will catch on. ICs a computer program designed specifically for the travel company and the vacations it is cur- rently promoting. The people at Marlin give O'Hara the details and he designs a visually arresting ad ona disk, with live action video images, still images, graphics and text anima- tion. It slips into a computer in the window of the store and plays 24 hours a day. “TY find that it catches people's attention — the movement, the pic- tures,” said Shamin Shariff, the manager of Thomas Cook/Martin, “It certainly has stopped people as they come down. They stop and stare and look at it.” It was too carly for Shariff to say whether the program would attract customers into the store. She felt it would have a greater effect if a staff member were to offer brochures to everyone who stops and looks at the computer screen. Firm turns page Vancouver's oldest book bind- ing company has turned a page in its history. Founder and president Bud Blaine, who established the business in 1952, has sold it to West Vancouver resident Kerr Bell. Bell, who brings over 20 years STARK KERR BELL industry experience to the new job, will maintain the company’s opera- tions in its current 2344 Yukon St. location and retain the existing staff of 24, The business is one of Canada’s major providers of cus- tom-designed viny! loose leaf infor- mation systems.
