Kariya tries
out for

junior team

A NORTH Vancouver
junior hockey player recent-
ly participated in an evalua-
tion camp for Canada’s Na-
tional Junior Hockey Team
in preparation for the 1993
World Junior Hockey
Championships.

Paul Kariya, 18, who plays cen-
tre for the Penticton Panthers,
was among 38 players par-
ticipating in the seven-day camp
in Kitchener, Ont.

‘*} would like to thank my fam-
ily and friends who have sup-
ported me and encouraged me to
reach this level,”” Kariya remarked
before the camp opened.

Last year Kariya won a silver
medal in Japan as part of the Na-
tional Under-18 Team.

The 1993 World Junior Hockey
Championships will be held in
Sweden from Dec. 26, 1992 to
January 4, 1993.

Canada will compete with the
seven other Pool ‘‘A’’ countries,
including the U.S., Finland,
Czechoslovakia, Russia, Japan,
Germany, . 41 the host country,
Sweden.

Biackcomb starting work
on high-speed chairlift

CONSTRUCTION HAS begun
on the Glacier Express, a
high-speed detachable quad
chairlift, designed to give skiers
greater access to the high
alpine terrain on Blackcomb
Mountain, including
Blackcomb aad Horstman
Glaciers.

Blackcomb currently offers
the Jongest lift-serviced vertical
drop in North -America of
1,609 metres. The new Glacier
Express will carry 2,500 skiers
per hour from the bettom of
Jersey Cream Bow! to
Horstman Glacier.

it will allow Blackcomb to
transport 7,760 skiers per hour
above the tree-line terrain and
bring the mountain’s total daily
lift capacity to 26,400 skiers
per hour.

“This will be the most ex-
citing lift we have ever
constructed, competitive with
the best Europe has to offer,’’
said Blackcomb president Hugh
Smythe.

“We expect the chair will
eliminate lift lines on the Sev-
enth Heaven Express and will
reduce turnaround times to

ing, said the new lift will carry
skiers 595 vertical metres in
just 6.5 minutes.

“The Glacier Express will be
the most challenging lift ever
built in North America. The
lift alignment climbs over shear
rock cliffs, spans the Horstman
Glacier twice and crosses over
top of the Horstman T-bar,”’
said John Birrell, Blackcomb
vice-president of operations.

The lift will be the fifth
high-speed chair at Blackcomb
and will be fully operational by
November.

The new Glacier Express is
part of another major expan-
sion at Blackcomb to accom-
modate the continuing growth
of the resort.

To fund the expansion, Nip-
pon Cable Co. Ltd. is investing
$25 million in limited partner-
ship units of Blackcomb Skiing
Enterprises Ltd. Partnership to
fund the development of new
terrain, lifts, snowmaking and
restaurant facilities over the
next five years.

Bicycle Trek for Life and
Breath, a late summer
fundraiser for the B.C.
Lung Association (BCLA).

North Shore cyclists who have
ridden in previous years’ BCLA

Earle. First-time trekkers are

Su-Bin Kuah.

While the Trek 92 isn’t until
Sept. 12 and 13, each of the 11
North Shore cyclists is collecting
donations now, as participants
must raise at least $350 in ad-
vance. The overall goal is to bring
in $160,000 for medical research,
