Paul Kariya, 18, who plays cen- tre for the Penticton Panthers, was among 38 players par- ticipating in the seven-day camp in Kitchener, Ont. ‘*} would like to thank my fam- ily and friends who have sup- ported me and encouraged me to reach this level,”” Kariya remarked before the camp opened. Gleneagles has a new practice driving range. ; Biackcomb starting work on high-speed chairlift CONSTRUCTION HAS begun on the Glacier Express, a high-speed detachable quad chairlift, designed to give skiers greater access to the high alpine terrain on Blackcomb Mountain, including Blackcomb aad Horstman Glaciers. Blackcomb currently offers the Jongest lift-serviced vertical drop in North -America of 1,609 metres. Dennis Hansen, Blackcomb executive director of market- ing, said the new lift will carry skiers 595 vertical metres in just 6.5 minutes. “The Glacier Express will be the most challenging lift ever built in North America. The lift alignment climbs over shear rock cliffs, spans the Horstman Glacier twice and crosses over top of the Horstman T-bar,”’ said John Birrell, Blackcomb vice-president of operations. The lift will be the fifth high-speed chair at Blackcomb and will be fully operational by November. The new Glacier Express is part of another major expan- sion at Blackcomb to accom- modate the continuing growth of the resort. To fund the expansion, Nip- pon Cable Co. Ltd. is investing $25 million in limited partner- ship units of Blackcomb Skiing Enterprises Ltd. Lung Association (BCLA). North Shore cyclists who have ridden in previous years’ BCLA treks are David Anderson, Denise Howard, Terry Moore, Walt Polzen, Tim Woodland and Lynn Earle. First-time trekkers are Monica Horvath, Kevin Karlsson, Chris Relke, Julie Wilkinson and Su-Bin Kuah. While the Trek 92 isn’t until Sept. 12 and 13, each of the 11 North Shore cyclists is collecting donations now, as participants must raise at least $350 in ad- vance.
