Posties obey back-to-work law

NORTH SHORE and Lower Mainland postal service was
expected to be back to normal today after the Canadian
Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) made good on its threat
to strike on Tuesday after serving 24-hour strike notice.

But back-to-work legislation
passed by the House of Commons
on Tuesday was expected to see
CUPW members return to the job
today.

“We will get priority mail out
today and we will also use
managemert personnel to .do the
sorting in the plants if the workers
walk out,’’ Canada Post
spokesman Doug McClelland said
* Tuesday. ‘I would say up to half
of the people will receive mail to-
day. Most of the carriers are
halfway through their routes by 9
a.m.’

46,000 postal workers across

“We have been through a con-
ciliation officer, a conciliation
board and a mediator. Now the
government wants to impose a
settlement on postal workers with
an arbitrator,” Chariton said
Tuesday. .

“It is not fair to postal workers
and it will exacerbate, not resolve,
the dispute between postal
workers and this government.
