Before venturing on a long trip, it’s wise
to do at least one weekend run to

establish some ground rules - and to @

find gut how well your kids adjust to
travel. You may find out that you'd be
better off staying home.

Once you've decided to take a longer
trip. involve the kids in the planning.
This is a good time to introduce them to
Maps and guidebooks.

\f you haven't already done so, take
them to a couple of restaurants for din-
ner. Coach them on acceptable stand-
ards of behavivr before you have to ccpe
with a traveling circus,

Remember, on a tong trip repacking is ay

necessary - pethaps every day. Do you
want the jab?

Satchels are a better choice than suit-
cases for kids, A hid can carry a satchel,
but a suitcase is usually too big for a
child to manage uniess he drags it. The
trunk of the average car holds more
Satchels than suitcases.

Provide a laundry bag and collect the
family laundry every night. Don't at-
tempt to bring enough clothes to tast
the entire trip - resign yourself to a visit
to a faundromat every four or five days.
Do your kids have some special toy or
blanket that they sleep with? If so, don't
leave it home! You won't enjoy the job
of convincing an overtited five-year-old
that “Bunnykins" witl sleep just fine
without her.

always travel with more than you think
you'll need. If your prescription leans
toward the exotic, it may be in fmited
supply. Mf it's a strictly controlled
substance you meght not be able to
convince 2 druggist that it's safe to give
it fo you.
Never pack medications in baggage to
be checked but only in hand bags that
you will carry with you.
If you are leaving the country, be suse to
have the generic name of the drug
copied in several places - one with your
travelling companion. Purses get snat-
ched and hand baggage gets lost.
When travelling to exotic places, have
yout medical condition described and
translated into the language of the

Everyone needs a document to travel in-
to Mexico. 1f you are North American,
your travel agent can issue you a tourist
card
{f you hold the passport of ancther
county you must have your papers
checked by the Consulate of Mexico in
Canada before you leave.
it's not @ long procedure but it is abso-
futely vital for entry into Mexico.
Also. if a single parent is traveling with
minos children into Mexico 2 letter of
permission from the other parent is re-
quired and must be presented - not
mailed - to the consulate. The dates of
travel must be included.
This also applies to any child traveling
with anyone other than the natural
narents,
Be sure to contact the Mexican consul-
ate (684-3547) if any of the above
should apply to you.
