North Shore gymnasts at World Che nionships| THE 1988 Best Ever Pro- gram started with three gymnasts from the North Shore leaving on October 15 for the 1985 World Cham- pionships in Montreal. Sandra Botnen, 15 and Tracy Wilson, 16 were nam- ed to the team while Miriam Michel 15, is one of the top 12 invited to the World Championship training camp just prior to the meet. Michel is in ninth place and still has a possibility on the team. Former Flicka coach Mike Vossen was named coach for the Canadian team. The 1988 goal is to have eight aymnasts in the top 30 in Canada, and three carded athletes, To reach national level a gymnast must pass testing levels, and do well in competition. Up to 22 hours of training a week are necessary, and they must maintain good schooling records. Seven. other Flicka girls are to take part in the pro- gram. The consistent record of female gymnasts entitles the women to participate. it was young gymnasts like Karen Kelsall and Philip Delesalle who blazed the trail at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, showing the world that British Columbia had top gymnasts. After Kelsall and Delesalle, gymnasts from the Flicka Gym Club .in North Vancouver have carried on the B.C, flag. Anita Botnen and Bonnie Wittmeier were both members of Worid Champi- onship teams and Olympic team. The provincial Best Ever facility is at 123 East 23rd in North Vancouver. Sentinel Secondary School in West Vancouver will take most of the girls in the mor- ning, while others will stay at their own schools. They will train at the pro- vincial facility five after- noons per week, for four and one. half hours a day. Three other gymnasts will continue to train’ at the Prince George Schoo! of Ar- tistic Gymnastics. This is the first provincial training centre for women set up by a gymnastic Association. in Canada. The program can accommodate up-to 20 gymnasts from around the province. Out of all the gymnastic programs in Canada only eight girls are named to the team, and from there only six actually compete in the event, The Best Ever Program will be assessed every three months throughout the com- ing year by the B.C.
