No, the passion of which | speak has recently inflamed the indignation of people in our quiet neighborhood, which I tend to think of as Greater Tiddlycove. It began a month or two ago when, walking my two sadly aging dogs along Marine Drive early in the morning when this lovely thoroughfare is almost a country road, I espied an obelisk. An obelisk is, as Funk & Wagnalls says, a square shaft of Trevor Lautens > GARDEN OF BIASES learn of the existence of beaches undreamt of. Our shore has many such beaches. An example is the Washington Monument, which is 555 feet, 5.5 inches high. This obelisk, however, was maybe three or four feet high, which is quite a bit shorter. Also it was made of cement. But it had something the Washington Monument does not have, The word ““BEACH”’ on its various sides. The letters ran ver- tically down the obelisk. This one was at Parthenon at Marine Drive. Later I aoted another one at the next corner, at Kew Cliff Road. What & good idea, I thought. Which was apparently whet West Vancouver believed when it erected these mini-monuments, here and doubtless elsewhere. They could plunge into their brisk waters and emerge refreshed, if in fact not dead. Warmth is not the first quality we associate our waters with. It was an idyltic thought. Then the bikers came. I did not see them. In our quiet neighborhood of tiny wildernesses, information, with all respect to the North Shore News, is often passed along simply by word of mouth, Thus it was learned that passing \ bikers, doubtless from some hideously inferior suburb, had seen the obelisks, gone by several times until they had pieced together the letters into a word, and joyfully descended on one such beach. There, they drank beer. The residents were not amused. The obelisks definitely attracted people, and not always the right sort. I admit I had not foreseen this possibility. Nor, presumably, had West Vancouver municipality. That’s to say nothing of the parking situation, of which even- tually nothing, or not enough, had been said. Very sHortly after the first tremors of rage, I passed one of these obelisks and was surprised to see that the top two-thirds had broken off. Inferior construction, perhaps, thought I. But then a neighbor reported having heard some heavy, whack- ing thuds in the middle of the night. The two phenomena might have been linked. Someone speedily replaced the top of the obelisk onto the bottom part. And soon after that, the obelisk again suffered some unfortunate accident. This time it fell into lit- tle pieces. Pulverized. The second obelisk has met with a similar fate, _ Surely, no group of ~- the word simply doesn’t belong in West Vancouver — vigilantes had at- tacked them. Surely? I do know that a neighbor brought around a petition last week, ‘‘We, the undersigned ..."’ and so forth. It advised that the obelisks be removed.
