THE FIRST NOEL

The First Nowell is one of the oldest and most mys?zrious of
our carols. No record is known of its origin. Sir John Stainer
harmonized this version from the many renditions of his day.
The song is not in keeping with scripture: the shepherds didn’t
see the star. But the music and v-ords of this old song remind
us all of the wonder of the season.

The first Noel the angel did say

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they
lay:

In fieids where they lay a-keeping their sheep

On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Luther. The song Originated in the country that fostered
the tradition of the Christmas tree. During the Civil War this
tune was borrowed for ‘‘Maryland, My Maryland!”’
