The Flames piay 2 second exhibitien game with the Bluehawks the following Thursday at Burnaby. For new tead coach Fred Des Rochers the two-game home series with Biuchawks provides the only opportucity he wilt have to evaluate and fine tune the Flames before the season officially opens at home Saturday, September 23, against the Seattle Northwest Americans. The two-game series with the Bluchawks should also be a good test for the Flames as Burnaby finished runner-up in the league ehampionship lest season and is expected to be one of the top fin- ishers again this year. No admission will be charged for the Saturday exhibition game which gets under way at the Winter Club at 8:45 p.m. Coach soccer league kicks off THE WORTH Shore Coaches Seccer League kicked off a new season with a full slate of games on Sunday. In ie feature match of the day, Rangers F.C., now sponsored by Midas, North Shore, fought back for a tough 3-1 victory over Accountemps, formerly Park Royal Hotel. John Webster opened the scoring for Accountemps when he cut into the penalty area from the left wing and slipped a low skot into the corner of the Rangers’ net for the only goal of the first-half. But the second-half belonged to the Rangers as first Iain MacKay with a pensity-kick and then Dino Johnson with two goals sealed the victory and a successful start to the Rangers season, In other matches, Norvan Oldtimers blasted Pemberton Station and Mt, Seymour Ravens thumped Candia Taverna by identical 6-0 scores, O.K. Tires hammered Coach Hcuse Spurs 6-1, Olympia Gold Caps downed Swan Lager 5-1, Nordic F.C. doubled F.C. Germania 4-2 and Molsons nipped Fosters Pacific 3-2. N. Van. skier makes B.C. team NORTH VANCOUVER’S Jason Close and Gavin Forsyth are members of the British Columbia Ski Team for the 1989-90 ski season. At 16, Close is the youngest member selected to accompany the provincial team for three weeks training in Chile. An honors student, Close is part of Sentinel High’s Super Achiever program for young athletes. Also a member of the Mount Seymour Ski Team, Close is coached by Rondi Fisher and Derek Trussler; an ex-racer from Canada’s national ski team. Highiights of Close’s 1988-89 season include second overall in ‘the Lower Mainland finals at Whistler and first at the B.C, Cup Finals held on Grouse Mountain last March. A member of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, 20-year-old For- syth is also in Chile until mid-September. Dave Pym, past chair- men of the Mount Seymour Ski Team predicts Forsyth will break into the national level this year. ‘*Gavin Forsyth is very close to the national ski team now. He is knocking on the door. If he has a good year he could make it,’’ Pym.-said. The provincial team’s first race is the S.1.S. Slalom and Giant Slalom at Blackcomb from December 14-17. Granger garners fourth in race PAUL GRANGER, the North Vancouver firefighter who won the World Police and Fire Games triathlon, cruised into a fourth place finish in the final race of the Royal LePage Series in Milton, On- tario. Granger completed the 1.5-kilometre swim, 42-kitomectre cy- cle and 10-kilometre run in 1:57.18. Cap Blues start soccer season on the right foot THE SEASON has barely started and the Capilano Blués soccer team, with a new roster, already has two wins under its belt. “It was really our first competi- tion as a team. Travelling to Washington for a collegiate season opener, the Blues defeated Skagit Valley College, the reigning Washington State champs, 3-1 on Saturday. Andy Blachos and Russell Collins snagged the first two goals with George Hecimovic scoring a hat trick to make a score of 5-0, lacobellis said he’s starting the year with a mixture of new talent and veteran players. “This year we've got another entourage of good players,’’ lacobellis said. New to the Blues is midfielder Dino Condilenios, fresh from the Victoria Vistas reserve team. Midfielder Russell Collins and centre back Mark Watson, both Canada Games team members, are on the pitch for the Blues and are joined by newcomer Mike Dodd, a midfielder voted MVP last year at Argyle. From Thursday to Saturday, Capilano College is hosting the eight-team International Cup with play on the Capilano College field and Kinsmen Stadium.
