Douc COLLINS @ get this straight YOUR MAN Doug has just had a brilliant idea. There should be National Hate Literature Awards, and the CBC could provide special coverage for them on The Journal. It would be quite safe for the corporation to do this, because the ceremonies would boost bilingualism. This brainwave came to me after Jean Larose had won the $5,000 Governor General's Literary Award for his book La petite noirceur, which title you can get Laurier LaPee to translate for you. To add color to the event, the prize was hand- ed out in Calgary at the Olympic Arts Festival by Herself, the Governor General of Bil- ingualismn and Multicult, Jeanne Sauve. I have not read Larose’s opus myself, being pig-English. But it was described this way by Mark Abley in The Gazette, the only English language daily newspaper left in Montreal: “A book that instructs Quebecers to ‘nurture our hatred for Canada’ has been nominated for the 1987 Governor General's _ Award — the foremost literary prize in Canada, “La petite noirceur, by Jean Larose, a litcrature professor at l’universite de Montreal, also tells its readers: ** ‘Everything that weakens and humiliates Canada...must ' Cause us to rejoice.’ Larose characterizes English Canadians as vulgar and small-minded, and ' claims they have ‘nothing to of- fer us but their stupid mediocri- ty" Except, the reporter might have added, for their determina- tion to crawl to French Canada and to destroy themselves. The professor wasn’t present to collect the bucks himself. Perhaps he was busy concocting his next great work. But he sent a message stating that ‘‘in spite of everything that Quebec might have against Canada, we must pay tribute to the fact that it is a free country where dissidence is allowed and even rewarded.” Some people woud disagrec. Ernst Zundel and James Keegstra, for instance. kk O* Did I mention the CBC? That gives me another idea. There should be Governor General’s Awards for The Most Slanted Television Program. The Journal would win in a walk for its two-episode, piss-a- bed propaganda feature called Le Canada Nouveau, which Man pleads guilty to sex charge ne A 31-YEAR-OLD Gibsons man will be sentenced March 31 in North Vancouver provincial court after he pleaded guilty Feb. 22 toa charge of having sexual intercourse with his foster daughter. James Carl Joseph was original- ly charged in connection with an April 21 incident. was shown a few days ago and informed us how delighted we were to get French on the cor- nflake boxes. (With more to come, as readers of this column will know.) It was pure CHC. Bill 101, Quebce's fascist language law that forbids the use of English on public signs and shop fronts, was dismissed in two sentences. H's necessary for the preservation of French, we were told. There were lots of references to the French having been “second-class citizens,’ bul not a word about the 80,000 and more English speakers who have quit the province because they were being discriminated against. We were told that the country would have broken up had it not been for official bilingualism. But that's not what Rene Leves- que used to say. He said he didn't give a damn about whether French was spoken in the rest of the country. He was concerned about French power in Quebec. A small nugget of interest, if true, was that we have that French-language station in Van- couver so that Francos who hap- pen to drop by can feel at home. (The station costs us millions and the last time [ checked, had a peak audience of 500.) Le Canada Nouveau my ass. Give me the Kingdom of British Columbia and put a fence around the place, kt kk It is nice to be loved. I have here a letter signed by a June M. Vos of West Vancouver, an abortion fan and militant feminist who says that freedom is ‘‘not being controlled by men.”’ In her darling postscript she states: ‘‘I’m planning for my future business -- STUD FARM! -- and am vying for Collins who I will use to service all dark women!’’ Whom you will use, Vos old girl. Also, you can’t vie for me. Abuse men if you will, but don’t abuse the language. Besides, do you think that Grey Eyes would ever let you use I that way? © Fr wichions DRAPES BLINDS RE-UPHOLSTERY - RITE reel MARCH SPECIAL 2G OFF Sanderson Fabrics Drop by and browse thru 100's of designs by SANDER- SON, Robert Allen, Westgate and more!
