When you arrange for professional photographic portraits, you should get the finest quality possible. Here are some things you can do to ensure a smooth sitting for your baby or child and portraits you'll be proud to show: ¢ When selecting a photographer for your child, choose a specialist in children's photography. The photographer must be able to establish rapport and gain the trust of your child. ® Select a time for the sitting when your child is rested, fed and likely to be content. © Bring one of your child’s favorite toys, or a bottle for infants to pacify them during any wait that may occur. Other useful items to being along include a hairbrush, fresh diapers and a complete change of clothes. e Encourage your child, bui don’t try distracting antics to produce smiles or laughter. The photographer needs your child’s undivided attention. © If your child starts to fret or cry during the sit- ting, the photographer will probably ask you to pick up the child immediately. You may also be asked to sit by the child throughout the sitting and secure his or her position on the stool or pedestal. What your child wears can influence the look of the final portrait. Here are some guidelines to follow when preparing for the sitting: * Colors: Red and bright blues photograph well. Avoid greens, yellows, white and washed-out pastels. © Patterns: Avoid busy fabrics that will detract from your child’s face. Solid fabrics or smali prints are good. ® Style: Make sure clothing fits well. Clothing with a little interest ardund the shoulders works well — smocking, collars, contrasting yokes. Avoid abundant lace or frills. © Hair: Hair should be trimmed neatly. Simple hairstyles are best. Keep barrettes or ribbons small. . * Shoes: Use well-shined black or coordinating col- ored shoes with the outfit the child is wearing. Avoid - white shoes, except on infants. For girls, avoid tights, as they tend to bag — anklet socks are better. For boys, match socks to pants so they won't stand out in the portrait.
