22 - Wednesday, December 16, 1987 ~ North Shore News Sports occer NORVAN OLDTIMERS con- tinued to dominate their Coaches Soccer League opposition with a week-13) drubbing of Characters Restaurant by a 6-2 count. Norvan uncharacteristically sur- rendered two goals for the first time this year, the first being a fine effort by Characters’ winger Rick Watson to open the scoring. That only served ta wake up the Norvan juggernaut, however, and Ceremony caps race program From pags 27 gressive — all in preparation for the afternoon's giant slalom race, the culmination of our three days of training. While day one refreshed my legs as to what skiing was all about again, and day two introduced me to seemingly iisurmountable new challenges which — combined with the duy’s wet conditions — mace me wonder why I was there, day three started bringing it all together. The snow was drv, the sun came out and my legs started to do what they were told. I was anticipating the big race with new hope, Murray set the course for the women; instructor and program coordinator Peter Youny set the course for the men. We donned our racing numbers. | was number three, a prestigious position that in professional racing would be saved for a top skier; however, in my case | was given an advantage over the better racers, so I wouldn’t have to ski a rutted course. My anticipation mounted as | waited at the top of the hill; the announcer hyped the crowd with his enthusiasm; I moved toward the starting gate; and then the countdown, 3-2-1, go! I felt like a real racer, | had the hill to myself, carving around the gates, the cold air biting my face. When | reached the bottom, I had an incredible sense of achievement --- I finished and | didn’t fall. “—T want to do that again,” I said. At the awards ceremony, I was honored as Most Improved Rookie, a coveted award, I am told. I also placed third in the race in my age category. (But I’m afraid — sigh — I have to confess there were only three qualifying racers in my age group.) Besides Murray, Young and Kamstra, Masters Camps coaches include (in alphabetical order) Danny Aaron, Gary and Greg Athans, lan Bunbury, Andy Cresswell, Rochel Daoust, Craig Glenday, John Kindree, Vlad Lamoureux, Jacques Morel, Jim Parsons, Keith Robinson, Dean Stone, Kevin Titus, Vicky Vogler, Cate Webster, Jordan Williams and Dave Wood. Special guest coaches include (in alphabetical order) Gord Brown, Jim Kirby, Kathy Kreiner, Diana McNab, Steve Podborski, Grant Rutherglen and many others. Special thanks and appreciation go to Kamstra, who won the hearts of his group (including this skier’s) over the three-day course with his good nature, patience, en- couragement and constructive crit- icism. Murray — himself an inspiration — floated between groups, overseeing the training, taking runs with skiers and offering good solid advice that won't be forgotten. (Murray will be instructing at future camps.)
