provide a lifetime of pure, concert
hali-quality music for your home.

In spite of their remarkable
durability, Sally Brow::e, executive
director of consumer affairs at the
Electronic Industries Association ,
cautions: ‘‘These discs are not in-
destructible and should still be
handled with care.’’

The compact disc’s durability,
she notes, results both from the
way it reproduces music and from
the durability of its plastic materi-
al

She explains that compact discs
encode music in tiny bumps
embedded in a clear plastic disc,
which are read and translated into
dynamic sound by a cD player’s
laser.

Because a mechanical stylus is
not. dragged through a compact

_ disc’s grooves, it does not wear

with repeated playings.

The discs are made of a tough
polycarbonate plastic, the same
material used in making. airplane
windows. Although this. material
resists warping at high

* temperatures, prevention is still the

best remedy when it comes to han-
dling a prized disc. -.:

Says Browne, “Although acpD -[

player compensates ~ ‘for minor

defects, a serious warp can.ruin'a
disc. It is a good idea to treat CDs‘
.. as you would treat a vinyl LP.

- “Store them in their cases away

from -heat sources, such as

radiators, and away from intense,
direct sunlight. Also, -like ’1.Ps,
discs should be handled only by
their edges.”’

disc is simple,’’ says Browne. ‘In: .

Unlike cleaning a vinyl record,

the best method is to wipe from —

the centre straight to the edge, like
polishing the spoke of a wheel.
Because digital information is
recorded in a spiral running out-
ward from the centre, cleaning in a

.' Straight line outward will lessen the
-~possibility that a dirt particle will
‘scratch the surface and obliterate

entire musical sequences.

The cardinal mule, she says, is
avoid cleaning unless it is absolute-
ly necessary.

“*Above all,’ Browne says,

“never, never use a glass cleaner,
solvent or cleaning fluid designed

«for vinyl records. These will fog
the surface and make it impossible .-
