Doug Collins [TO CHRIST Ch va H : ay b i . ae tte hedral in’ Vancouver to @ vel his straight @ hear Right Reverend and Right Gullible Archbishop Ted Scott talk about South Africa. He demonstrates that while there may be hope for us in the next world, there is none in this. The dog-collar politician ped- died bosh for two hours, after which 1 left: without dropping anything in the collection plate. If J want propaganda, | can get it for nothing from the commu- nist-led African Nationalist Con- gress itself, which the Archbishop unabashedly admires. The ANC, he said, is ‘‘basically’’ a na- tionalist organization. Yes. And so was the National Liberation Front of South Viet Nam. | remember all kinds of eminent fools using those very words. But now the issue of what the NLF was has been dropped. Similarly, we will hear no more about the colors of the ANC if it comes to power. No use giving Scott chapter and verse. No ase telling him that a majority of the ANC executive members are members of the banned South African Commu- nist Party. Or that Joe Slovo, a top ANC man (and a white), is the chief theorist of that party and a colonel in the KGB. He wouldn’t want to know. Violence? The kev. Scott says he does not like it. But it’s some- times necessary, you know, like when we were fighting the Nazis. Are the white South Africans Nazis? He didn’t say. But one may infer from what he did say that ‘‘necklacing’’ and similar persuasion approved by the ANC are understandable. How about Chief Buthelezi, who is against apartheid but also against violence? Well, Scott states condescendingly that the leader of 6,000,000 Zulus is ‘‘us- ed more than he knows’’ by the government of South Africa. 1 And he can get a visa any time he wants one. So can Archbishop i Desmond Tutu, who travels the world to denounce the country. But the speaker didn’t mention | that. Perhaps he is used by the ANC more than he knows? Sanctions? He’s for them, of course. Worse is better, you know, as Mr. Lenin said. { went to Christ Church Ca- thedral. But where was Christ? “om Over to Larry Kuehn, the left-winger who once led the B.C. Teachers Federation and would jlike all the little kids to grow up to be like him. I recently wrote a column for a Vancouver paper in which | bashed him and Tom Berger for condemning South Africa while ignoring the real horrors gaing onin Black Africa: Mozambique, Ethiopia and Angola, for in- staree. On Friday, a response fron Kuehn appeared in’ the News, he being chronically con- fused and evidently not knowing which paper to write to. But he gave vent to the usual stuff: Col- lins is a racist, etc. Well, [| would rather be a racist than an idiot. He also complained about my saying that South Africa has the only free press in Southern Africa. Why, he declared, it is so bad that even the Southern Africa Society of Journalists has described it as ‘‘the final resort of the world’s worst dictator- ship. "* . Has it? A call to Mr, Peter McLean, managing director of the Newspaper Press Union of South Africa, brought the com- ment that it was news to him, and a Johannesburg Star man told me with a laugh that although a strong statement had been made by the SASJ_ the above was quote, ‘‘a slight exag- geration.’’ Perhaps it came from someone in wonderful Zim- babwe, where every daily is own- ed by Comrade Robert Mugabe’s government. Even if it did come from a South African, the state- ment is absurd. How many Rus- sians would dare to say anything like that about the U.S.S.R.? The recent restrictions on press freedom in South Africa are to be deplored. But the press there is still light years away from the press in the rest of Africa. If you doubt me, read it. The media fights the government in court, too. Try that in Mozambique! You make me sick, Kuehn. Collins, says Kuehn, is un- concerned about ‘‘the 20,000 who have been arrested since the state of emergency was declared in June’. Well, what the true figure is I don’t know. Kuehn doesn’t, either. The South African government has made no statement. The prejudiced World Council! of Churches claims 40,000, other sources say 3,000. Take your pick. Whatever it is, 1 would still prefer being a prisoner in South Africa, where there is an independent judiciary, to being in the clink in Angola, etc., where the commissar is the court.
