BRUCE OB The mile-high Skyway is the southern side of a loop which circles the Nelson Range of the Selkirk Moun- tains, an area rich in scenery and intriguing human histo- ry. A 250-kilometre journey takes you high into the mountains of the Kootenays. The city of Creston is the service centre for the vast and fertile valley surroun- ding the town. Known as the valley of the swans, the area is a sharp contrast to the Tugged mountain landscape which dominates the Kootenays of southeastern B.C. IT’S A NATURAL It’s located about mid- way on the Pacific flyway, the world’s westernmost migratory bird route. Some 240 bird species use the valley for nesting, feeding and resting. So important are Creston’s fields and marshlands to North America’s migratory birds A Little Luxury A Little Wilderness sh Saas = LIT TLE GUN LAKE LODGE Latte Gun Lave Loage 0s Wee tae wet CHOSE weInes per mgnt Jom us soon Gur 1085 Far tesmr vats SOLUCIN eteds Chitde: APD COM, TOONS wt We te north of Bemberton and west of Lic t ALcomadanne 4 saNob Opens Lay sed AG nce aban Conte Hester ae Mae AN GON ya fore se OFA He QUEM Eon ees BOe0 gat. tow eran un EA Liltle Gun Lake Lodge General Delive Gold Bridge. There's a provincial cam- pground in the wildlife management area at Summit Creek, eight kilometres west of Creston, as well as full tourist facilities in town. Most of the area is open to visitors and programs in- clude canoe trips, marsh crawls, forest and meadow walks, films and talks. On the outskirts of Creston is the Kootenay Candle Factory, manufac- turer of the well-known Honey-Lite Candles made from locally-produced beeswax. FISHERMAN’S PARADISE The mile-high Skyway begins at Creston and heads west along Highway 3, a route endowed with fishing creeks and no major com- munities. It’s an angler’s paradise and many fish- ermen like to set up a base camp at Stagleap Park and fish two or three creeks a day. The Skyway ends at Salmo, a town with a popu- lation of 1,100, often used as a base by gold panners. Like the Skyway, the road be- tween Salmo and Nelson is crossed by countless creeks, and both gold panning and fishing are high on the list of attractions. Salmo is also home of the world’s oldest telephone booth. Nelson, often referred to as the city of parks, has 372 heritage buildings, more than any other city in B.C. except Victoria and Van- couver. It's an old city, in- corporated in 1897 during the Kootenay’s mining boom, Many of the buildings are being restored and walking tours of the original residen- tial and commercial sections Our daytrip to Squamish-and-back aboard the famous Royal Hudson Steam Train is a thrill in itself.
