w sport Sokalski blanks Whalley Chiefs Steve Sokalski sparkled in pitching N.S. Mountaineers to a 40. shutout over Whalley Chiefs in the first game of a double header at Inter River Park on Sunday. The Mounts scored three of their runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Rex Reece drew a walk; then Duane Poterall singled to right, advancing Reece to third. Steve Wilcox singled to second, driving in Reece, and moving Poterall to third. Wilcox stole second, and when an attempt was made to throw him out, Poterall stole home. Wilcox stole third, and then crossed the plate on a pass ball. The other Mountaineers’ run came im the 6th. Bob Mill singled, advanced to third on an error, and was driven home by Ray Martin. The Chiefs bounced back to take the second game 10- 3. The Mounts’ Curtis Ed- wards started on the mound but was relieved by Steve Wilcox and Dan Ray. The Jr. B Mountaineers’ record now stands at 4 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Their next action at Inter River Park is Wednesday, May 14 at 6:30 when they meet Richmond. stole second, Yics sweep pair of games The young, aggressive North Shore Yic’s won their opening double header from Richmond's Fraser Arms on Sunday with scores of 41 and 7-5 in senior baseball action. In the first game Yic’s got solid pitching from Mitch Sokalski, who allowed only six hits in going the distance. Bran Buchols powered a three run homer and John Hollander doubled in the other run. In their second game, Yic’s scored four runs in the first inning. Starting pitcher Digby Leigh ran into control trouble in the 3rd, and was reheved by Gord Smith, the eventual winner. Trailing 5-4 in the top of the Sth, Yic’s received a key hit from Bnan Buchols, who stole 2nd; and scored on Mike Doodson’s single. A double from Gordie Jacobson drove in the winning run. Next game is 6:30 Thursday evening at Inter River Park against defending Canadian champs Van- couver Pharoahs.
