dai can offer all this for under
$15,000, but I guess we'll have to

produce the Mustang Mach 111,
displayed at the Vancouver Auto
Show, but sone of its features
may end up on the 1994 Mustang.

The Mach 11! is another low-
slung, two-seat, convertible sports
car with huge wheels and low-

front-engine/rear-wheel-drive
Mustang. Mach I1] has a super-
charged version of Ford’s new
4.6-litre dual overhead-cam alloy
V8 engine that develops 450
horsepower. The Mach 111 will go
from 0 to 80 in 4% seconds.

Although it’s hard to imagine a
450-horsepower motor that is en-
vironmentally friendly, the Mach
111’s powerplant is ‘‘sensitive to
the environment’’ because of its
flexible fuel capability, according
to Ford. .

The 4.6-litre V8 can run on any
combination of gasoline or M85 -
(85% methanol/15% gasoline).

The car’s on-board computer
adjusts the air-fuel mixture
automatically. to compensate for
changes in fuel mixture. With a
higher octane rating and improved
emissions, M85: helps the Mach
11k to perform better and pollute
comparatively less.

The Mach 111 also incorporates
such innovations as- adjustable
brake, clutch and accelerator
pedals, six-speed manual
transmission, huge vented and
cross-drilled front. disc brake
rotors for tremendous stopping
power, an active rear spoiler, and
a 1,000-watt stereo system.

in many ways, the differences
between the Boxster, HCD-11 and
Mach 111 reflect the automotive,
heritage of the countries they
emerged from.

Porsche, with its long and
proven racing heritage, has chosen
to meet the future by updating the
past. 4
Hyundai has borrowed and im-
proved upon technology from
Japan, North America and
Europe tu produce a_ capable
sports car, at half the price.

And Ford has embellished the
traditional American idea of per-
formance by dropping an enor-

mousty powerful engine in a stnall
body.

Which idea will see successful
production?

I'd put my money on the’
Hyundai HCD-11, It’s practical,
fuel efficient, emissions friendly,
aliractive, and most of all, af-
fordable. Hyundai is an enormous
company with the resources to put
this car into production, and
they’ve given themselves a gener-
ous amount of time to do it.

As a sidebar, South Korea is
one of the fastest-moving
economies in the world, about
where Japan was 15 years ago.
Hyundai, Kia and Daewoo will be
the car companies to watch in’ the
'90s and beyond.
