52 - Friday, September 6, 1985 - North Shore News Entertainment ON VIEW AT VAG Goya’s works Sti THE DISASTER OF WAR, a series of 80 etchings by the Spaniard, Francisco Goya y Lucientes, are now on view at the Vancouver Art Gallery. One of mankind’s most passionate and eloquent pro- tests against organized human conflict, these works are as relevent today as when Goya produced them be- tween 1810 and 1820 under the original tile ‘‘Fatal con- sequences of Spain’s bloody war with Bonaparte. And other striking caprichos....”" Goya (1746-1828) was 64 when he began work on this epic chronicle. Spanish resistance to the French in vasion had already been underway for two years. Goya witnessed it gather momentum and culminate in an uprising that engulfed the entire country with peasants taking up pitchfords and knives to resist the guns and sabres of the French troops. RAW MATERIAL The atrocities of that war, the famine to which it gave birth and the wave of repression and terror which followed the Spanish monarch, Ferdinand VII's return to the throne in 1812 was the raw material for this masterpiece of social com- mentary. “Most of the scenes in The Disasters of War appear to have been recorded on the spot, as they were indeed witnessed by Goya, or revealed to him through the accounts of friends. Apart from a description of terror these etchings resemble some aspects of the work of the news photographers of the twentieth century in their at- tempt to bear witness to the nature of man’s war against himself. Despite this simi- larity of purpose, Goya has the ability to have us see beyond the representation of an extraordinary time of ter- ror in Spain, to externalize the chaos of both mind and society,’ szys Lorna Farrell Ward, Vancouver Art Gallery curator for this ex- hibition. NOT PUBLISHED The artist who had, for the better part of his long career, been favored with royal patronage, did not publish this series in his lifetime. The plates were left in his son Javier’s safekeep- ing, following his death in 1828. They did not come to light until after Javier’s death in 1854, Five hundred sets were published and released in Anniversary Sule Continues...
