West Vancouver’s Olga Kotelko, 78, tasted the elixir last year ac the B.C. Senior Games held in Kamloops. She competed in six events and came home with six medals — four golds and two bronze. “I was ecstatic,” said Korelko without a hint of overstatement in her tone. Particularly rewarding were her gold medals in the throwing events — javelin, shotput and dis- cus, “I participated in the throwing events for the first time and I got gold in cach one,” said Kotelko. However, it is now time to-put pasr glories out of her mind and train hard for the 1997 U.S. National Seniors Sports Classic in Tueson, Arizona, Mav 21-28. The lengthy name shouldn’t under- score the event’s importance as it is, after all, dubbed the “Seniors Olympics.” The training regimen she fol- lows would put many people half her age to shame. It includes practising her events, but “it doesn’t stop there. She also par- ticipates in aqua-fit classes and § lifts weights regularly, As one of 11 children reared -in Saskatchewan, her upbringing probably had a lot to do with the work ethic.
