C4 - Friday, July 27, 1984 - North Shore News THE LAST STARFIGHTER Space fantasy parallels land of Oz IT’S FINALLY happened. Star Wars and the Wizard of Oz have merged in the movie The Last Starfighter. With a bit of gender bending, Dorothy is called Alex Rogan, a teen stuck in a small dusty town where the adults don’t understand him and he never has any fun. Alex (Lance Guest) wants a chance to escape the Starlite Trailor Court and prove to everyone including his girlfriend Maggie (Catherine Mary Stewart) that he is go- ing to be someone. **...he finds his own Kan- Sas twister that will whisk him away from boredom and point him towards the Stars.”’ Alex turns his frustration into a fixation with beating the one million mark on the local video game, defending the universe against the inva- sion of alien creatures. Alex is offered a chance to become a Starfighter by a space-age horse trader named Centauri (Robert Preston). Preston 1s at his predictable best in a similiar role to his famed Music Man image, wheeling and dealing to make a buck while remaining the lovable rogue. He blasts off with the starry-eyed teen for a distant planet, where it turns out that Alex is the last remaining defence against aliens who are. breaking through the borders of the Galaxy to pillage and burn everything in their path. Hesitant at first, Alex sets out with his guide Grig, a talking tguana-faced creature that is Toto, the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow all rolied into one. With the ‘Gung Ho Iguana” at the navigational controts of his starfighter, Alex is soon play- against an array of evil aliens that resemble the angry talk- ing trees that plagued poor Dorothy and her friends. With every Star Wars special effect at its command, The Last Starfighter (while obviously a cliche of many similiar films) is a harmless bit of fantasy, with little ac- tual gory violence in it. A good old fashioned thriller that most kids should look forward to, this film will also let adults sleep easily, knowing their kids won’t have nightmares from wat- f tree when one of purchased Valid anytime Offer expires August 31, 1984 Gest Store aN SEAFOOD RESTAURANT 2x ~ Steak & Seatood - 2422 Marine Drive West Van (Dundarave) (Parking at rear) ching it. Alex, if of course trium- phant over the galactic forces of evil that threaten’ the universe and in a lightening fast series of video moves, soon puts the run to those nasty gnarled tree like villians. But The Last Starfighter has one up on the old Wizard of Oz fantasy. While Dorothy decided that there was no place like home, Alex isn’t about to return to his dusty trailor park and che hum-drum reality of life.
