Dear Editor: ‘{ would appreciate your print- ing this letter not only as a thanks to the persons involved, but it may also ‘provide an uplift to all those of us who have become convinced that there is very litde left in this world that is good or honest. I recently had the misfortune of ‘losing my purse on Lonsdale duc’ entirely to my own carelessness ~ and the need to be rushing to three different places at the same time. After checking and rechecking my: route and all the stores along the way, [ resigned myself to going home and cancelling an entire - identity. that's taken 41 years to establish, AH credit cards, bank accounts, etc. were dashed away with only a few. dozen phone calls. A few hours later, after many lectures from family and friends, J wearily picked up the phone to a man who “had found my purse. He gave me his address and told me I could pick it up that evening, His daughter answered the door, handed me the purse and after much persuasion’ accepted the small reward that I offered. Every single item down to the last penny (as well as what [ was convinced were winning lottery tickets) were still in the purse. My congratulations to these wonderful people for displaying a sense of caring and honesty that thought was lost. Very special seasons grectings to you-and yours. CONTROVERSY IN 1995 Equity Magazine called last week for my 1995 predictions. if the full list gets printed you will see that | expect 1995 to be a year of contro- versy. | specifically rnentionad a Bill to expand employment equity that was tabled in Parliament on Monday. The new Bill would legislate min- imum numbers of women, natives, and visible minorities to be hired by the federal government. In addition, cartain companies: doing ‘business - with tha Government would’ be required to comply with the same quota provisions, This is despite a December. 1993 Gallup poll which showed that. 75%- of ‘Canadians think employees should be selected solely’on, the basis of merit. The . same poll indicated that only 11% of British Columbians support govern-. , ment employment equity programs. MOTION NUMBER 372 __ A clear majority - of Canadians 7 think that forced employment equity programs create racial and gender- based tensions between job appli-.. cants. | have also heard many peo- ple comment that if. mistakes were | mado in the past, they cannot be corrected by over-compensation | today. The real aim should be to | ensure selection on the basis of merit, nol on the basis of ethnic or gender targets. {n the hopes of forcing an early debate, | recently tabled a motion in Parliament dealing with this subject, Motion 372 reads: “That, in the opin- ion of this House, the government should immediately end employ- ment equity programs and the inclu- sion of employment. equity require- ments cn employment or training forms because such requirements encourage candidate selection te be made on the basis of sex or ethnic origin rather than merit, and, as a result, foster a sense of resentment among applicants." It will be at least February bafore my motion, or the new Bill, is fully; debated. However, any . major protest needs to be. organized immediately. If you have pezsonally been told you ara incligible for a job or promotion because of present employment equity . provisions, - | ‘would like to see the details in writ- ing. There Is the potential for wide- | spread discriminatory hiring ‘prac-. - tices to be implemented if the now Bilt; passes and | need to ensure that a few case histories are given expo- sure in the media and in Parliament. If you own or work ina company which could’.be ‘affected, please become involved. Tell others about this Bill; and send | your. comments to the Minister of. Human Resources, Hon, Lloyd Axworthy, at The House : of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario, KIA OA6, No’stamp is required. je Check Your Welcome Mat Watch for the College's Extension Programs Winter ‘95 calendar on your doorstep this weekend.
