A SALMONELLA outbreak in the U.S. has prompted the local health department to warn people to be careful in preparing and storing melon and cantaloup. The outbreak, which started in dune, is believed to have affected people in more than 12 American states, according to Bill Kimmett, director of environmental health, Nosth Shore Health. The majority of food poisoning cases in the U.S. appear to be linked to meton and cantaloup in fruit bars where the fruit has been cut and lef: unrefrigerated for long periods of time, he said. Although people should not be paranoid, Kimmett said they should be careful when preparing and storing melon. Local health inspectors will be advising restaurants of the precau- tions that should be taken.
