Station Square and Co- quitlam cinemas) VER WONDER what happens to certain characters after the curtain falls? In the case of The Last Picture Show, director Peter Bogdanovich fills us in. Picking up 33 years later, the middle-aged characters are lumbered with Texas-size mid-life crises. TIM BELL film review Duane Jackson {(leff Bridges) now runs an off business that’s $12 million in debt. Both he and his wife, Karla (Annie Potts), have had affairs and his children are pro- miscuous, jail-bound hellions. The myriad of supporting char- acters in this vodka-soaked town have similar disaster riddled lives, facing everything from unwanted pregnancies to insanity. Proving misery loves company, the former homecoming queen, Jacy Farrow (Cybill Shepherd) returns to her old stomping, grounds to lick her wounds. Both her marriage and son have died. Duane’s old feelings for his high school sweetheart are stoked by Jacy’s flirting, but he resents her friendship with Karla. Seemingly endless characters pop up fora cheap laugh or to wr- ing tears from their pitiable condi- tion. The trouble is that there are no three dimensianal figures ex- cept for Karla, Duane and Jacy. The women are busty drunks and the men are weak, gun-toting +, The numerous subplots ~ cuntrived and just add contu- sion toan overlong film. That said. Bridges and Potts arc excellent and it’s laudable to see a film risk relying on Characters in- stead of explosians to entertain, Dona Flor and Her Two Hus- bands **% (Fox Lorimar Home Video) Rated R This saucy romp follows Dona Flor (Sonia Bragga) losing her first no-good husband to drink, gambl- ing and prostitutes, But she starts to miss his charismatic energy when she marries a conventional, dull pharmacist for-security.
