& ~ Sunday, June 24, 1990 - North Shore News MaILbox Clyde Welis commended Open letter to the Honorable Clyde Wells, Premier of New- foundiand: Over the past week of constitu- tional talks in Ottawa you have shown a measure of courage and of principles that have helped to greatly restore the trust of Cana- dians in their Constitution, in their Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and in the supremacy of the people of Canada over the politicians. You are recognized as a Cana- dian of great principle and stat- ure. Despite the considerable pressure you were put under behind closed doors by the prime minister, Premier Bourassa, Premier Vander Zalm and others to compromise on your principles and on those principles of equality and fairness that are the cor- nerstone of Canadian society, you insisted on fundamental im- provements to the Meech Lake Accord. Canadians are eternally grateful. Although you and Premier Gary Filmon of Manitoba did not achieve all that you felt needed to be achieved to protect the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the companion agreement that you and Premier Gary Filmon helped forge, and the interpretation of the ‘‘distinct society’’ clause of Meech Lake that is now part of the Constitution because of your efforts will in years to come grow in significance. One day soon Cana- dians hope to see your Canada Clause entrenched in our Con- Stitution as well. We know how troubled you now feel and how yau feel you have not done enough to protect the Charter and Canadian unity. Canadians know that you have done all that you could, given the tactics and personalities lined up against you. You have acted in an honorable and courageous man- ner. Whatever happens in the future because of the shortfalls and am- biguities of Meech Lake, those consequences should not weigh on your conscience but on the con- science of others. In your firmness, you have spoken to the very essence of the Canadian federation. ti your clos- ing remarks at the First Ministers’ conference in Ottawa, you insisted that we put our feelings for Volkswagen Cabriolet. Volkswagen Canada first and our provinces second. You insisted that what unites us should take precedence over what separates us. In your firmness, you have given new life to what the great Canadian parliamentarian Edward Blake stated a century ago: “The future of Canada depends very largely upon the cultivation of a national spirit. We must find some common ground on which to unite, some common aspiration to be shared, and I think it can be found alone in the cultivation of that national spirit to which I have referred.’’ I think it is fair to say that the people of my community.
