The gent with the deep, lone- some voice remains a playful orig- inal, tossing out heartbreakers and Canadian myth makers with the easy assuredness granted by the 25 years he’s put into his craft. Tunes like | Never Want To See The World Again or It’s All Over Now, Anyhow, wilf surely bring on the salty tears. And Connors lovingly tweaks the nose of a Ca- nadian country contemporary on Lady k.d. lang: “... her main =~ - claim to fame was how she sang with a twang, and jumped around like a rang-ee-tang, Lady k.d. lang....”’ 7 : The old stomper even offers a neat antidote to help hold back the northward creeping tentacles of Uncle Sam’s free-trade octopus. Put the honest patriotism express- ed in Tom's Canada Day, Up COUNTDOWN TO THE. LONG WEEKEND. Canada Way up against 01.5. country singer Lee Green wood’s tacky God Bless Canada, and you'll see why Stompin’ Tom’s fans mist over every time they see an RCMP squad car in the rear view mirror. One of the most provocative flicks to hit movie house screens in years, also comes with a lively set of supporting tracks. Public Enemy's Fight The Power, the belligerent in-your-face rap at- tack opening the film, declares open season on fence sitters and sets the tone for producer-direc- _ tor-writer-actor Spike Lee’s brilliant ‘joint’. Steel Pulse, Take 6, Al Jarreau and Ruben Blades also add some right musical moments fer Lee’s Bed-Stuy morality play. ***3 Youssou N’Dour — The Lion, Virgin Records 1989 FEY ANINNG ntinues ANYONE INTERESTED in seeing @ moving performance of the life of playwright Brendan Behan shouldn't miss Confessions of -a Irish Rebel at Centennial Theatre. Behan, who died in 1864, is resurrected in the form of Shay Duffin. Duffin delivers a lively act, breaking into song and telling stories while slugging back the Guinness. He portrays a man full of witticisms and torment; at times it’s hard to figure out if it’s Duffin or Behan on stage. Confessions of an Irish Rebel ends September 2. There are still a few more days to catch this touching show. Phone 280-4444 or 987-PLAY for tickets. It's been years between new releases, but it’s here and it comes with polished claws and dancing paws. Since bringing the house down at the now-defunct Expo Theatre for a great snow at fast year’s Van- couver jazz festival, N’Dour has drawn much deserved worldwide recognition as part of the Amnesty International Hurnan Rights tour entourage. — The man from Senegal has a high-flying wailing voice with a life of its own. It swoops, it rockets, it’s verbal jazz. With Super Etoile de Dakar, N'Dour also has one of the hottest bands on the scene. The band trades in a seductive synthesis of funk and snaky Afro- polyrhythm and blues. Amnesty pal Peter Gabriel checks in for one of the highlights on the album, Shakin’ The Tree. - There's more to come from N'Dour this year with a soon-to-be released set of songs recorded with Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto. Should be interesting.
