Well, enough promises. The future is now, and it’s about time I got caught up. Furst of all, electric vehicles. We hear a lot about them as the answer to fuel shortages, but there are problems, too. For example, poisonous stibine gas is generated during electric vehicle charging cycles and firefighters will have to be trained to handle accidents with electrics. When there is an accident, there is some danger of spilling battery chemicals into local sewer systems. Emergency personnel - and the injured, too - could receive some serious shocks from wrong handling of the battery packs. Some of the powerful new batteries operate al extremely high temperatures, so passengers must be shielded from the heat both during driving and in case of an accident. These shields add weight to the vehicle, reducing efficiency. There is also the problem of recharging on long trips. I suppose all these are reasons why gasoline cars are still from extinct. And why the “world” car, caricatured here, will be ROW, powered by the traditional © gasoline engine. To produce small, fuel- stingy vehicles, manufacturers standardizing parts and assembly lines all over the world. Eventually, they'll be able to make the same car in Europe as in Detroit, although there could be some styling are differences. Ford is the leader in this field with its world car, code- named Erika. The first models of Enka are expected later this year, and a General Motors entry won't be far behind. Electronics is another field 1 touched on recently. The microprocessor - which is, in effect. a mini computer - 1s a quarter-inch-square chip of silicon. Each chip contains a complete circuit with thousands of components. It is inked with the rest of the system by 24-carat gold wire about half the diameter of a human hair. This microprocessor is already used in hand-held calculators, electronic games, digital watches and so on. And it also is being used in on-board computers in cars like the Continental, Lincoln and top-of-the-hne Cougar XR-7. On cars, this modern marvel will monitor things like brake lining wear, low oil and tire pressures, overheating and so on. This little brain will control electronic spark timing, fuel metering and idling speed. As I said, the future is now. And for a free look into this future, drop by Brasso and check the electronic wizardry installed on our Continentals, Lincolns and Cougars.
