Drown said he ‘twas aware’’ that Furk had been sacked, ‘‘but I don’t want to get into it at all.”’ The Socred chief organizer said he would not even confirm or deny “who I met with or when, or if.’’ Furk, who had worked for the Crown corporation for two-and- a-third years — one on contract, the rest as a full employee — said there had been ‘‘absolutely no mention”’ of dissatisfaction with her work. She is convinced the fir- ing was ‘politically motivated.” Furk is currently negotiating the terms of her severance package, and said she did not want to com- ment further. The New Democratic Party’s critic on Crown corporations, Bob Williams, says the Furk firing “‘makes it very clear that this gov- emment is actively involved in patronage one way or the other.”’ He said he did not doubt Furk had qualifications for the job, “‘but Mrs. McCarthy has a long political history herself of political patronage. It is too much of a coincidence for this case to be anything but more patronage from the new people. It’s the way they do business.’’ Williams said if the firing is part of a purge of all McCarthy ap- pointees, ‘‘a lot of people will be losing their jobs. ‘In fact, there would be about a One-per-cent increase in unemployment in B.C. if that happened," he told the News. 5 - Friday, January 27, 1989 - North Shore News CAPILANO MALLS THE 4 We Oe IS ON!
