The North Shore Lifeboat Society (NSLS) has not initiated any legal proceedings against any organization or groups as your itr- ticle states. The lifeboat in question was removed from service by the B.C. Lifeboat Society-North Shore Sta- tion members when Mr. Horst Klein refused to renew liability in- surance and removed signing authority from the West Van- couver bank without notification of any members, leaving the BCLS members unable to pay accounts. NSLS currently has 30 active volunteer crew members who give of their time day and night to help mariners in difficulty. In order to achieve a high level of service, training of crew is conducted on a weekly basis over a 10-month period. Members maintain. their standard first aid dickets and CPR as well as designated first aid at- tendants with Uneir IFA and EMA [ and II fevels. The Canadian Coast Guard has trained the members in disaster Management and triage, hypothermia, diving accidents and Provided coxswain training in Bamfield as Coast Guard Auxiliary members. Many members have also availed themselves at their own cost with other courses such as fire fighting, radar, sea survival, marine emergency duties, ete. As a point of interest, the North Shore Lifeboat crews have operated dedicated SAR vessels on the waters adjacent to the North Shore since 1981 (as an organized group) and responded to the fol- Jowing number of Marine SAR in- cidents: 251 in 1986; 138 in 1987; 65 to date in 1988. The actual number of incidents that occur adjacent to the North Shore is much higher as is evidenc- ed by the amount of calls the Coast Guard, police and private citizens respond to cach year.
