Dollarton Highway deliars dropped RECONSTRUCTION plans _ for the Dollarton Highway have been put on hold indefinitely after pro- vincial Minister of Highways Stephen Rogers scrapped previous plans to assist in the funding pro- ject. After having been assured that provincial funding had been ap- proved, North Vancouver District Council has now been advised that funding will not be available in either the 1987/88 budget or the 1988/89 budget. Ald. Mary Segal said no further reason was given for the reversal in policy, and Ald. Ernie Crist called the move ‘‘inept and incompe- tent.’’ District council had set aside $1.3 million for the purpose of reconstructing the Dollarton Highway after hearing the funds would be forthcoming. Segal said the process had gone so far as to pass through the Victoria legislature. Council has now asked the pro- vincial secretary to intercede on the district’s behalf. In a letter to the provincial sec- retary, Mayor Marilyn Baker states, ‘‘After being. advised by the officials in the ministry that the design was completed late last year and the project was to go to tender, we are totally chagrined to now receive correspondence from the Honorable Stephen Rogers (the former minister of highways) ad- vising that there was no money ... all of this after the municipality had budgeted not only $1.3 million for our share of the roadworks but the additional $1.3 million needed for watermain upgrading in con- junction with the project. “Furthermore, we are now in receipt of advice from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs that a Reve- ‘nue Sharing Act grant has been approved in the sum of $337,500 to assist in funding a new water- main. Now we are advised there is no money for the road.”’ Similar letters have gone out to Premier Bill Vander Zalm and the highways minister. ) Bawah GHdhe Cafe Open for lunch, dinner and weekend ‘brunch Ocean view patio seating \N ROW OPEH ( FOR RESERVATIONS: )) -925-1945 ) _1362 MARIHE DR.
