Dear Editor: Lately there has been much con- troversy about handwriting analysis and its validation, |] am referring specifically to the con- troversy over graphologist Mr. Aron Printz, and his work in screening job applicants using handwriting analyses and psychologist Professor Beyerstein of Simon Fraser University who opposes the practice. The use of handwriting analysis has long been established as a viable science in Europe. In a uni- versity in Switzerland for instance, a two year study in graphology is * required before entering a degrec program in psychology. It is also taught in many universities in Germany and France. I would like to make a few suc- cinct points. First, handwriting analysis is a projective technique and as such, can be understood in the same context as the TAT (Thematic Ap- perception Test), the Rorschach, FUNDING ALLOCATIONS VD libraries defended Dear Editor: I would like to make a few comments in response to the letter from N.J. Sewell regarding the disparity between public libraries ‘in West and North Vancouver « (North Shore News, Jan. 20). ,,L do not know why Mr. Sewell - has been under the impression that ‘public’ libraries are provincially » funded.‘The vast. majority of local + Hbrary™ funding comes; and always “has-ccome, from’: municipal _ fi- _hances; the provincial contribution “is only a sraall Percentage of the THE PATTERN OF POVERTY Please contribute to: USC%s Canada| (613) 234-6827 total budget {in the case of our library, less than seven per cent), The North Vancouver District Library is fortunate in the support we receive from our municipal council, which has always shown a keen interest in library develop- ment. The district library has en- joyed steady and dramatic growth, both in usage and in facilities since its inception as a municipal public library in 1964 Our latest development was the extensive expansion of the Capilano branch in 1985: while perhaps not quite comparable to the Palace of Versailles, Capilano is cotisidered to be one of the “show” libraries in the Lower 7 - Friday, February 19, the Tree, Wartege drawing tests and others. Because handwriting is the result of impulses generated in the brain and transmitted to the nerve en- dings of muscles in the writing hand it can also be termed as ‘brain writing.” It not only reflects the person on a physical level but also on a psychological and emo- tional one. Secondly, | would like to give my opinion that, even with exten- sive knowledge and training in Mainland. In addition to the Capilano Branch, the Lynn Valley and Seycove branches serve the central and castern parts of the district. It is not clear from Mr, Seweil’s let- ter which one he finds so distasteful, nor does he explain the specific nature of his dissatisfac- tion. If Mr. Sewell has any particular comments or complaints regarding the district libraries, we would be happy to discuss thern with him. However, in cases of personnel selection it is possible to sibstan- tiate opinions obtained after the normal process of screening has been completed. After interview- ing, evaluating experience and ex- amining testimonials by the pro- spective employer, then handwrit- ing analysis can provide another and totally objective viewpoint of the person being considered. 198K - North Shore News tec Thirdly, it is possible that Dr. Beyerstein is as yet unfamiliar with some of the latest advances in graphology, signs identifiable in the handwriting, which give in- dications of possible early childhood disturbances. This is an exciting and additional insight which could be a potential support for psychological findings and help in the counselling process.
