NEVADA VACATION THRILL Lasers LAST WEEK | saw a special show that very few people will ever have the chance to sec. As we stood among a crowd of thousands massed on Virginia Street in Reno, the casino lights were turned off, one by one, star- ting up by the El Dorado and working ulong the street — in a more or less orderly progression. by Barbara McCreadie From the other direction, as the last lights were extinguished, came a flashy laser show with the beams of light forming pictures with a Nevada theme. The climax was the lighting of the new archway over Virginia Street, still proclaiming Reno to be the “Biggest Little City in the World.” It probably is. Anyway, show over, my friend Suzy and I hustled up to the El Dorado where | actually made a few dollars — first and last time on this visit. Another highlight of our visit — Reno has embarked on a tourist promotion called ‘*‘Hot August Nights’. It started last year as a three-day production and was so popular that it was increased to a week this year and is promised to be dn annual event. Anyone with a "50s nostalgia bent will Jove it! Every night there’s an outdoor concert featur- ing various familiar groups and literally thousands of people are jiving on the pavement. Beer, soft drinks and snacks are sold — inexpensively. Despite the beer sales, the crowds are friendly and orderly — just a big group of people out to have a good time. Family groups are everywhere — had to laugh at two fairly young teens, dressed in "50s costumes attempting to five fo “Rockin”? Robin’. Today's kids have a helluva time with anything structured, but these two were giv- ing itan enthusiastic try. Speaking of costumes -~ I never saw so many ‘poodie skirts’’ in my fife — not even in 1956, People must have been sewing for months. One of the highlights of the week was the ‘“‘Prom'’. Held in the Convention Centre, it’s worth the price of admission just to watch the fashions. Everyone is dressed in °SOs prom outfits — taffeta hoop skirts, net flounces and more “white sports coats — with pink carnations’ than | could count. If you happen to know a group of people who'd like to take an unusual group vacation —_ this might be just the thing to plan for next August. {ll remind you about it next spr- ing so you can get busy hunting for prom gowns, white coats and crinolines.
