Mailbox 7 ~- Wednesday, February 11, 1987 - North Shore News ‘Pet power is a wondrous thing’ Dear Editor: I was very pleased to read in the North Shore News that North Vancouver City Alderman, Ralph Hall, is pushing for local senior citizens to be legally allowed to keep pets in apartment buildings in which animals are normally not allowed. Research has shown that ‘pet power’ is a wondrous thing, not only for seniors but for people of all ages; and the problem of stray animais with no place to live and no one to care for them is a terri- ble, ongoing tragedy, many of these creatures becoming ‘‘stray’’ because their owners cannot find accommodation that will allow them their pets. A small, helpless animal can have a remarkable effect on an elderly person who may be lonely, reclusive, and a bit of a shut-in. All of a sudden the individual, is most definitely needed in the life of the living creature dependent on him for food, shelter and love. The resultant two-way relation- ship that develops is a very positive one, benefitting the lives of both parties and, according to research, actually improving the physical health of the elderly person, not to mention his or her mental and emotional health. If landlords are anxious about some seniors not taking proper Collins’ ‘common-sense conservatism’ praised Dear Editor: As a free-enterprising, struggling young entrepreneur, [ wish to thank Doug Collins for his continuing (often lone) crusade to spread common- sense conservatism. Iam referring specifically to his recent debate with comrade Rankin at UBC, at which he presented his sensible views on the South Arican crisis. In the instances where Doug broke through Harry’s incessant incoherence on the topic, Doug made clear his stance that I am sure many ‘ordinary Canadians’ would agree with. As a young person who avoids government handouts, detests the growing liberal intolerance of right-of-centre Canadians, and who loves the great opportunities this land offers, I am curious how many other young Canadians there are who find Doug Collins the only true reflection of their ideas and ideals in the media today. I for one have read many publications, but the North Shore News is the only one in which I’ve found realistic and cogitating opinion — in the form of Doug Collins’ Get This Straight. Can your newspaper recommend a reliable local, South African wine bottle smashing service? *l’ve noticed that a local organization solicits money for the. defence and aid of South African political prisoners.
