51 ~ Sunday, December 7, 1986 - North Shore News LOCAL CHAPTER SUPPORTS EMERGENCY HOUSE Soroptimists help women worldwide ONE OF the North Shore’s oldest clubs, the Sorop- timists of North and West Vancouver, continues to work for the same principles The Western Canada region of Soroptimists International offers a $3,000 award every two years for a woman to continue studying at a university. Ross said members of the club all have professional careers or own a business. She said when a member retires from her workplace she becomes an honorary member of the club. The international club began in 1921 when 80 working women joined together ‘‘to foster the ideal of service.”’ * Today there are more than 75,000 members in 75 countries working to fulfil the needs of their communities. that it held when it began 36 years ago. Longtime member Enid Ross said she joined because she sup- ported the community work that the club was involved with, and enjoyed the regular get-togethers with other members. These reasons were also given for joining the club by new member Janet Porter. ‘*E principally joined because they support an emergency house for battered women,"’ said Porter, one of approximately 25 members. The house Porter spoke of is Emily Murphy House —- a halfway house in North Vancouver which provides shelter, support and counselling for battered women and their children. Funds raised by the club also go to training awards for women at- tempting to elevate their economic status through education. Special consideration for these awards are given to mature women, who are heads of households. The club also gives a youth citi- zenship award to recognize outstanding contribution by young people in their schools and in their communities. Six annual awards of $5,000 each are also made to women who wish to take postgraduate studies in careers which will enhance the quality of commurity life.
