A NORTH Vancouver man * went to hospital with second degree burns after a house fire Wednesday. By DAWN BURKE The fire, at 300 East 4th Street, occurred at 1:17 a.m. when two residents of a basement suite became distracted while cooking french fries. The grease ig- nited and the kitchen was set on fire. One of the residents at- tacked the fire with a garden hose while the second occu- pant attempted to take the pot off the stove. That resi- dent, whose name has not been released, incurred se- cond degree burns to his hands, shoulders and face. While the first resident managed to extinguish the kitchen fire, the grease fire itself was still burning. Smoke from the fire travelled upstairs to the main apartment of the house where a man, his wife and child were sleeping. The smoke activated a smoke alarm and the family quickly evacuated the house. The upstairs resident alerted the fire department from a neighbors house. He then returned to the scene of the fire with a chemical fire ex- tinguisher, and put out the grease fire himself.
