Bobby Roth talks about Heartbreakers ONE HOUR off the plane from Los Angeles, in- dependent movie director, producer, and writer Bobby Roth is talking politics and fiim with a reporter. By COLIN LAMONT But that is not surprising when you consider that Roth grew up in the 1960’s school ef student activism and entered the arts field to make political films. The 35 year old film maker was in Vancouver to introduce his latest film ‘Heartbreakers’? at the Vancouver international Film Festival. Made entirely on location in L.A., this 1984 feature is his fourth since finishing USC and UCLA film schools 10 years ago. Heartbreakers takes a comic look at a the social stigma of males showing emotion instead of macho mentality. Two males in their 30’s, an artist and a businessman, who have been best buddies since childhood, find themseives competing against one another in a parallel race for _ Success. Set against the flash of the often superficial L.A. art scene, this film combines real life incidents from Roth’s own life with a social issue of the 1980's, the search of the individual for his or her own place in society. ‘it’s funny, I don’t set out to do this but ali three of my last films, when 1 look back, seem to be about self-determination. People pull FEATURING being able to make up their own minds for themselves. it’s something that is impor- tant to me,”’ the bearded, curly-haired director ex- plained. He added that the social conscience or political theme in his films seem to be ‘‘get- ting less and less, | don’t know if this is Reaganism or what it is affecting me,”’ he joked. Certainly his desire to step behind the camera came from his own life experi- ences. ‘‘I came into film making from a_ political perspective,’’ he recalled, ‘‘! was at Berkely trying to be a writer. What I wanted to be was a documentary film maker and so 1 went to USC where | got some excellent technical background but the school was very Hollywood oriented, Then I went to UCLA which had an ethnic graphic course and was very politicized, I felt much inore comfortable there.”’ His first feature was 1n- dependence Day. Roth wrote, directed, and produced this first film as his master’s thesis for UCLA in 1976 for $27,000. It is the story of a southern black couple's search for the American dream in L.A.. Although not a commercial success, it allowed Roth to thread a social conscience See Roth Page 19 hearing oss? \ See us for good hearing aid service — sales, repairs, batteries and advice. northwestern 985-5552 SPECTACULAR 4 SEASONAL EXOTICS “CYMBIDIUM ORCHIDS PHALAENOPSIS ORCHIDS FREESIA, LILIES BIRDS OF PARADISE MINIATURE CYMBIDIUMS ANTHURIUMS WE MAKE f YOUR WEDDING 1A MEMORY TO LAST Package includes: 1 Bride’s Bouquet 1 Bridesmaid’s Bouquet 3 Corsages 5 Boutonnieres Capilano NURSERIES & FLORIST ua CO hearing centre 1910 Lonsdale North Vancouver Open Tues.-Fri. 9:30-5 Sat. 9:30-1.
