This vear has been unhke any other---most meetings scarred with mayoralty can- didate Tom Reid’s inftlam- matory statements, voiced in derogatory derision to arouse audience reaction reminiscent of a trade union hall. We have come to sym- pathize with North Van- couver and its past turbulent experience. Reid’s campaign of smear and innuendo provided no hard-fact backup. He skirted can- election libel many times, demonstrating inadvertantly what the next two- years could hold pohtcally for this community. It became an alarming forecast. His self-portrayal of a- man-who-would-be-mayor showed unprofessional im- maturity It prophesied divisive polarization” for West Vancouver, unlike any two-year term in its history. His camp. tollowers- thank God, not that many- arraved in whoop-de-do kiddie T-shirts of a par- pro: wonderment ticularly bihous yellow, duced only ‘touch of Was he rea/ly serious” His outdated technique, applying dissent and discord to divide, then attempt to conquer, was patently transparent. It did not com- plement the political style of West Van and its homeowners. lt showed no understanding or feeling tor the municipality's ambience His literature clairmed 98% attendance at council meetings. This was not to observe but to electioneer-- -with free-time exposure through long harangues be- fore the chamber'’s public podium microphone whenever Cable 10 TV cam- eras were rolling. At those times his only success, not intended, was [tO point up the Mayor's infinite patience and unflappable self-control. So many of his declamatory ‘“‘l will’ state- ments revealed the true ego-bureaucrat. His first- person proposals ignored the existence Of a six-member council (which must approve or disapprove all motions to the public’s business tn open meetings), to the point where he would be hard pressed to realize any cooperation from that elected body. The report about a two or three man crew intimidating class’ store owners into removing Mayor Humphreys’ posters from their windows has been authenticated. Large Hum- phreys signboards, costing $70 each, have been ripped down, cut up and the pieces stuffed in culverts---three disappeared between 6 and 7 am. on November 9 alone. From early on it became evi- dent that a smelly smog had settled over the community. unlike in any previous elec- tion In retrospect, all the cam- paign proved was this com- munity’s good luck to have a Mayor who works six days and most nights a= week, responsible tor a $24 million budget and paid less vearly than an executive pays his secretary, who continues to demonstrate integrity. stability and the talent to chair taxpavers’ affairs har- momiously,; who instills team spint within his council, en- yoys cooperation trom the semior staff. chooses col- leagues wisely---and per- forms with a touch of class In contrast, Reid's ram- pant conduct proved without doubt he is not such a man- --and not tor West couver Herbert L..
