oa AT - Sunday, August 19, 1984 - North Shore News BB mailbox [>< | sit a Leaders do care about bomb[ tHanx vou Dear Editor 1 have just read with in- terest two letters of the Peace Activists positions (re Lisa Ingram and Dennis Davis). These two ietters highlight what I believe to be the fun- damental flaws of the Peace Activist philosophy. The first being that our political leaders do not care, are unaware or are somehow too obsessed with war to give us peace. The second is that the two super-powers are equally as guilty and eguailly evil (although Mr. Davis states that he is far more frightened of President Reagan). Whatever we think of our elected leaders they and their cabinets generally have a high proportion of the ‘‘best of the brightest’’. They are often lawyers or some other professional, often medallists, valedictorians or successes in their field. They come from both lower and upper ‘‘class’’ backgrounds. Most worked with various charity groups long before they entered politics. It may be argued that their personalities are flawed, as evident by their choosing to go into politics; however, what type of people would you prefer? Every democracy elects these type of people from the Socialist Mitterand and ‘‘hawk’’ governments to President Reagan. Winston Churchill remarked that ‘‘Democracy was a terrible system by which to govern, and that he would change as soon as something better came along.’’ Where in a democracy is there a better talent pool of people to govern? What leads you to believe that our democratically elected leader- ship does not care and deeply desire peace? If it’s not our democratic system that you fault, then could it be that the ‘‘other’’ system is the pro- voker in nuclear escalation? So if you are angry, frighten - ed and upset and wish to speak out for peace, then please do so with reasoned direction. The next phase in the Peace Activists campaign is to have vast, well or- chestrated media coverage (write letters) of protest against the cruise, MX, sta- tioning of missiles in Europe and, of course, at the visiting of any high ranking American official, military or otherwise) To be strangely silent when a Soviet sub with nuclear weapons on board beaches itself in Sweden, to remain quiet on the build up » MICROWAVE OVENS THE LEADING RAND, AT ‘Low WAREHOUSE | PRICES - “wast OUR HE sHownooM COLON HOME FURNISHINGS - Warehouse Dlatibutlon Centre “OPEN TO THE PUBLIC . 1076 Roosevelt Creac... | (behind the’ Avalon) Open Mon,.fat. fron 1 ant to 6:30 pm BOG 8738 of SS-20s in West Russia, East Germany and Czechoslovakia. To profess righteous indignation about American imperialism in Chile, El Salvador and Nicaragua, but remain silent about Sakharov, the vast gulag, the tortured and op- pressed in each and every communist country. It is not difficult to see why those well intentioned people, who enter the peace movement feeling impotent, find new vigor and hope and clearly see the true enemy, U.S.A.! Only in this light can 1 fathom the workings of the minds that wrote the letters placing the blame on both the Soviet Union and the U.S.A. (for increasing tensions) in the KAL 007 incident. Those that wrote the letters, speak out on the radio and televi- sion and march with convic- tion in their hearts that both superpowers are equal in their share of blame for the state of nuclear affairs. It is for this reason that | find the peace movement a far greater danger to me and the democratic society that I value. If their real or perceiv- ed fear of nuclear annihila- tion is so strong that they are willing to perceive the U.S. and Soviet system as equal evils, then how can I trust their other perceptions. They can give away their freedom for the safety found in sur- render but | cannot allow them to give away mine. An interesting thing about the ‘‘better dead than red’’ slogan, is that those that have been, do not find it a trite, glib or a hackneyed slogan, of course; those who have never been, do. Ted Shandro North Vancouver Can her hairdresser hack it? Dear Editor: Love that Campagnolo! This recycled B.C. reject from the old Trudeau bunch is back for another go. Suraight off she appears on a Vancouver call-in show and Ilona Music and Dear Editor: Re Hunter article on birth control. As an independent can- didate for North Van- couver-Burnaby, I think voters should know where their federal candidates stand on various issues. | agree with Mr. Hunter that better methods of birth con- trol should have a high pri- ority. I regard the taking of life through abortion at = any stage as wrong and it could be reflected in economic and physical cataclysm if tolerated. It is interesting to note that Singapore has a policy that young mothers with lit- tle or no education will be paid $10,000 (U.S.$5,000) for being sterilized after the first or second abortion. the very first question was a peach: ‘‘Are you proud of your past association with Pierre Trudeau?’’ (That has the same class as: ‘‘Have you stopped beating your wife?) Anyway, the [ron Lady (MK Il) simply declined to answer the question! At = another sex drive I think we should also consider the effect of music (particularly sensual and rock) on the sex drive of individuals. The ancient Chinese were certain that all coarse and sensual music exerted an immoral effect upon the listener -- all music was closely watched so as to ascertain whether it was towards spirituality or degradation, its effect good or bad. According to Confucius, if one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well governed, if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish an answer. I hope that | have provid- ed some food for thought. Albert A. Ritchie, P.Eng. North Vancouver point she referred to Mr. Trudeau as: ‘‘Mr. Turner’s predecessor’’. Peter the Great is sure getting ‘‘the deep six’’ with dispatch. It’s time for ‘‘Pierre Who,’’ | guess. Don’t worry, Iona, there are plenty of other Liberal Judases out there trying to distance themselves from Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Mr. Spock, the Minister of Finance, has proved again he’s smarter than the rest and is simply packing it in. You’re right to not answer questions, lona. Stay with the image gambit. Then your only real problem is: Whether your hairdresser can go the distance. R.D. Pilommer West Vancouver and private consultation.
