- AB - Wednesday, August 17, 1983 - North Shore News . Dear Editor: At ‘the’ -Annidal _ General Meeting of the Lions Gate Hospital Society September three resolutions “lL. That a letter be sent to noring the fact that the Grow Freight Rate horts’B.C. in- dustry; ‘that and the fact that its elimination will bring on a major constraction boom. Two B.C. MP 's have pate an. awareness of "s needs. They‘are John | Fier and Frank Oberle, both Progressive Con- servatives. But the rest: in- Therapeutic Abortion com- mittee; “3, That the. hospital not pay the legal fees of the members of the LGH Therapeutic Abortion Com- mittees who are presently being sued for authorizing il- legal abortions.” On 30 September I. wrote ‘to Mr. John Borthwick, the Administrator of LGH, re- questing a copy of Board monthly meetings and “in- formation on actions and correspondence that the ‘Board and Administration see fit to follow on those representatives in Ottawa, are so caught up in partisan posturing that they can’t see where our national interests ‘begin and end. Water transport is cheaper than land transport; much . cheaper. Resilt: coastal pro- winces have a natural cost advantage over land-locked provinces. Of course the farmers: and thé. Wheat ‘Pools-on the Prairies want to keep their preferential rate for moying .grain to the Coast. They are*not worried hes cluding all of our NDP. three motions that I put for- ward, and were regularly passed at the AGM of the Hospital Society held on 1 September, 1982.” On 22 October Mr. Bor- thwick replied to my letter regretting that “the minutes of. Board monthly. meetings and medical reports: accor- ding to the hospital by-laws are not to be sent out to members of the Society.” He further stated: “I waited to get some direction from the Board in respect to the ac- tions arising from your mo- tions on September 1. At this about the fact that our B. BC. industries, exporting ‘forest products, coal, other ‘mineral products and fer- tilizers etc., have to make up the difference. The Crow Rate is now one-fifth of cost. It hasn’t changed since 1898!_ Can you blame them? Solution: abolish the Crow Rate. Phase out Subsidies to them ys rode t their at through ihe Ro North ‘Vancouver Seymour time, a committee has been set up by the Board to review what should be done concer- ning the annual meeting in general and once we hear from: them I will let: you know.” On 14 July I reminded the Administrator in a letter: “Nearly nine months have passed since I received your letter. In that period I have received no further com- munication from you or from anybody at the hospital.” In the same letter I asked two questions: “Has the committee set up by the across B.C. to the Coast. Be- ing more efficient they'll lower the real cost of moving grain. Meanwhile we in B.C. will see $6 billion worth of construction in the 1980s! What do our candidates in the upcoming federal by- election in Coquitlam have to say on this subject? Wan- ting the support of thinking British Columbians they'll surely say “the Crow must go”! Hon. Jack Davis, M.LL.A. Board referred to in your let- ter not yet reported to the Board? Has the Board taken no action on those three mo- tions of mine which were passed .at the Annual General Meeting in September, 1982?” Now on 3 August, just a month before 1983’s AGM, I am still mystified as to the Board's activities and inten- tions on the three motions ‘passed by the membership a year earlier. I have been a member of the Hospital Society for some years; I was an elected director of the Board for three years. Presently I feel helpless as the Administra- tion appears to be ignoring a legitimate enquiry of a Society member in good standing and delaying for nearly a year information on a matter of life and death. ‘Does the Hospital Board and Administration seriously ex- pect the community, and in particular members of the Society, to believe that quality service is being pro- vided to the “whole com- munity?
